Little mermaid ‘Poissondrieke’ meets bubble quilting

Christmas timing is coming closer and I wanted to share with you what my little mermaid has been up to.  Last time I showed you my latest illustration and the little bags I embroidered and painted with it.  This week it is time for Poissondrieke to swim her way up to your screen (or hands).  I used a very fine quilting with natural shapes to surround her, from water bubbles to leaves.  And of course her hear straps are flooding around while she greats you with a smile. And although it is not common for a nautical creature to like flowers, Poissondrieke has a favourite!  The white Lilium Arum flower, which  has a shape between flower and leaf and knows herself to hide very well in shape, if it was not for the difference in colour ( and I think that’s why Poissondrieke likes her so much, the hide and seek part).  So here you have some of my embroidery quilted pouches with Poissondrieke :

illustration ‘Bolinhas a Largar’ @ http://www.kuskat.be

I’m so happy to finally share with you one
of my new illustrations I made called ‘Bolinhas a largar’ red,
what means little dropping balls in Portuguese.
A little group of different characters stacked up one another and holding on to that.
Anyone want to give them a push so they drop?

This colourful illustration  was also one of the first drawings where I have been testing out these new inktense pencils.  They are very different from regular aquarelle pencils, they give a much brighter livelier colour, perfect for my kind of illustrations :-)  And the great thing about them is, they can be use on fabric and they don’t wash out!  So I have been experimenting mixing the little dropping balls with fine embroidery quilting and painted illustration.

For the following pouches I have use my favourite technique of free motion embroidery or thread painting on a ‘sandwich’ of cotton fabric and batting.  It makes the surface more fluffy and adds a beautiful quilted relief to it.  The bag becomes also more sturdy.

Colorful custom made throw pillows with a child’s drawing on top

Colorfull custom made square pillows children's drawing wine red

*

Whimsical, Colorful and full of child imagination

*

A new week has started and I’ll show you a bit more what the new KusKatStudio has been up.  Last June I have been making these colourful custom made pillows.  A good friend of mine wanted to give a special gift for a first communion.  We let the three girls of the family make their own drawing and I transferred them to square pillows.  No KusKat figures this time, but imaginative, playful and colourful children’s imagination.

*

First I had to print the drawings and make them in little pieces of appliqué.  For making the little appliqué pieces I use some adhesive iron on paper.  It is a paper that is strong enough to hold its shape while turning the fabric edges, and afterwards you can take away the paper leaving the piece with the iron on residue.  What comes in handy for ironing the piece in place before sewing.

*

And as with the most of my products, the used fabrics are 100% cotton textile and all prewashed before assembling the pillows, to avoid any color bleeding when they get washed later on.

*

*

After the piecing process comes threat painting to transfer the children’s drawing in thread and put the applique pieces in place.  I used the technique of free motion machine embroidery, a embroidery way I came to love allot these last years.  On the back of the wine red base fabric I put some backing to make it more easier to embroider on it, still a embroidery hope was needed.  And sometimes, the back looks much better …

*

*

And here you have the finished throw pillows.  I like it you can put the drawings of your little ones around in the house, on the beds, put them in the couches, lay them on chairs,…

*

Pillow fight anyone?

*

*

I would be thrilled to make more of these square throw pillows with children’s drawings on top, so if you have a little girl or boy in the house and there creative scribbles and are interested, please contact me here

*

And at last but not least a picture of another throw pillow out of velvet cotton fabric I made for a little girl.  She had made a wonderful drawing with dogs and bicycles and a airplane,…. for a custom made twin quilt (I will share that later on with you).  And with that comes a soft and cosy decorative pillow.  I loved doing these little dogs!

Vindimas in the Douro Valley and KusKatStudio

Standard

wijndruif

It has been a while since I have been taking up the typing machine to write you a blog post.  In the meantime lots of things have changed.  KusKatdesigns moved to a new atelier, and with a new place comes a new name,

KusKatStudio.

In my new Studio new drawings and figures are coming to life, two bright new collections are being created, new techniques are being experimented and a new website is getting ready to be shared with the word wide net.

Lets say, the last months have been very, very productive and creative.

But more about that I will share with you for the next weeks coming.

Douro valley, cycling rio Tua, Port wine

(source: Katelijn Smissaert, Douro Valley)

This time of the year is when its time for ‘Vindimas’. The picking of the wine grapes, the gentle feast of crushing the mature grapes with the bare feet’s, some music and a good cup of last years wine.

Porto is known worldwide for its ‘Vinho do Porto’, Port wine.

A sweet red/white fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Valley.

But what is less know is the good quality of real wine that is produced in the Douro region, as well as the wines of the other regions of Portugal ( Alentejo, Tejo, Dão, Palmela, …).

Last year I was asked by Olga of the Olga Santos Gallery to make a costume figure for the wine of Paulo Santos.   And with this new character I created Products like a wine apron, a wine bottle bag, a bread bag, and wine glass coasters.  Carefully embroidered on 100% natural cotton.

wine glass

And as the Douro valley this time of the year is flocked with people

ready to have some beautiful Red feet’s,

you can understand where the inspiration came from

If you are interested  in the process of the wine here at the Douro Valley, you might want to see the pictures of Douro exclusive of Ana Carvalho and Marcio Pinto.  They are specialised in giving people the best Douro Valley experience.  Check out there website here.

As for me, I still prefer my good old bicycle to cycle over the hills and inside the valleys.

Hope you enjoyed the big red feet’s.

Easter egg hunt small treats gift bags

Standard

For this Easter I decided to make a new collection of small drawstring bags to use as cloth gift wrap for the Easter hunt.  Little bags to accommodate great goodies and to hide in the garden.   A way to make your own gift mix and no need to be giving plastic wrappings to your kids.

IMG_25602 As young girls, my sister and I got really exited every time Easter got closer. On Easter day morning we would wake up very early and run out in the garden to look for our Easter presents.  Looking for eggs hiding under bushes and toys hanging in trees (these rabbits can be tricky!). Here you have a picture of us with the others kids of our family after Easter search.  Can you find me? kat

(Hint: I’m the only one in Easter color)

Now back to my new little party bags.  I made two series, one with a more natural, rustic look where the figure are only embroidered on the bags.  You can find there my figures, starting from the left : Giraffe, Visser (fisher), Poissondrieke, KusKat and Passarinho

IMG_1725 And a series where the figures are bright-colored, using applique and embroidery.  You can find there, starting from the right : KusKat , Poissondrieke, Bollekes, and the unicycler Coureurke in line and in the front there’s my Cat IMG_1648 This special favor bags would work very well to wrap in small crafts material, sweets, little toys, you name it. And because they are made of cloth and washable, the kids can reuse them as storing bags in their bedroom or as a lunch bag to accommodate their sandwich and fruit to go to school with. Here you have some more pictures of the bags

This small drawstring bags are made out of 100% natural colored cotton, but they are available also in muslin and pure linen.  You can find my bags here in my shop, or if you have any request, please feel free to contact me here   So, and what are you up for Easter?   This post has been linked to olives-n-ockra, Coffee With Us 3  and Mummy 2 monkeys

Breakfast on a Sunny morning.

One  of those things I love to do in the morning, is to get out of the bed and make myself a big cup of coffee.

Put on my shoes and go in the garden to that calm spot with the first, early sun.

Ready to calmly wake up to that new day that’s ahead of you.

After some cold winter months here, every bit of sun and warmness is so joyful.

Oh and I forgot to mention, from the moment I leave the house, along comes the biggest tiger from them all.

Nesting himself on my legs as fast as I sit.

Sunbathing with coffee…

The bird in the cage…or was it a Vietnamese girl?

One of these settings that gets me intrigued are shadows and sunlight.

Throughout my pictures you’ll probably already came across it or will get to see it.

It’s like creating this great theatre set but only get to see the mirror.  The second vision .

A world in a world inside another world!

As a maker its a place to be  imaginative and to manipulate reality.

Lets say its like setting up a playground and get to see into each corner, hide in each corner.

Look in that hole… Let stand above this….Down it goes!
